New  ruby/sapphire  mine  in  Winza/Mpwapwa,  Tanzania

Werner Radl,  MAWINGU GEMS ( http://www.euromineral.fr) sent an email describing the reopening of this mine.  Pictures of extensive pitting, fine faceted rubies, and an interesting ruby/sapphire dogtooth point make this an interesting revelation.  We will have more to say about it after Werner returns from field explorations in June, 2008.

Page under construction.  Hyperlinks to localities to be installed.  Until then, see Original Site for most data.  However, there is an interesting new development of an old locality that I could not wait to report...

Perhaps the best known material from Tanzania is the red and green ruby in zoisite from "Longido".  Several areas produce gem rubies and sapphires, among them "Morogoro",  "Songea",  "Tunduru", and "Umba".    "Ketito" is regarded for its elongated pink ruby crystals.
