BASIC MINERALOGY

Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide, Al2O3, which in gem form is known as ruby or sapphire.   In general, rubies are red corundum and sapphires are corundum of any other color.  Emery abrasive is also a form of corundum, usually a metallic grey due to the presence of high amounts of hematite (iron oxide) inclusions.
